Dinner and dancing at nalen

Spring 2013

The English Speaking Community Club

We were seven around the table at Nalenís restaurant, on Saturday, March 23rd.† We were a mixed group:† Ferda and Hakan Hizar from Turkey, Liljan Ohman from Finland, Maria and Patrik Holmťn from Sweden and South America, myself from The United States and my friend Eva from Sweden.† We had a great time.† We talked and talked and all of us were not shy† about introducing ourselves and making conversation.† We talked about our lives, jobs and making it in Stockholm as a foreigner.

†Nalenís restaurant is very small but pleasant.† It is a cozy place without loud music so it was conducive to talking and getting to know each other.† They have two seatingís, one at 6 pm and the other at 8pm.† We were there at 6 and were allowed to sit and eat and talk until 8.30pm.†

Nalen is a building that takes up a whole city block.† It was a popular dance place during the 50ís, 60ís and 70ís.† Then it was closed for 10 years for renovation.

After our dinner we exited one door of this building and entered another door where the dancing was taking place.† After paying a cover charge and a wardrobe charge we entered an enormous dance hall with a stage for a huge orchestra. It was breathtakingly beautiful with a crystal chandelier hanging from the ceiling.† The music that night was from the 1940ís, 50ís and 60ís.† While we were there, it was only 40ís music.† Big band music.† I personally love that type of music because I like the horns-trumpets and saxophones.† We all stood around an elevated round table and watched.† The clientele were in their 70ís and 80ís.† They were excellent dancers.† They danced ballroom dancing and really counted their steps.† Then, Patrik invited me to dance.† Then he danced with my friend Eva.† Then he danced with Lilian.† What a good dancer he is!† And thanks to him I got to dance.†

My friend and I left early.† We felt that we were too young for this crowd.† But we left, Ferda, Hakan, Liljan, Patrik and Maria watching the crowd gracefully dancing ballroom dancing around the enormous dance floor and counting each step they took.

We all had a great time.† Again I was reminded of the purpose of the ESCC.† We bring together English speakers who are new to Stockholm or old to Stockholm for fun and friendship and conversation.† We all need that from time to time.
